What to Know about Khmer Translation

Khmer art

Khmer translation services are in increasing demand both in the country and abroad. The rising demand for Khmer translation in Cambodia is driven by more and more products and services serving the local population. As the standard of living increases and people have more disposable income, the market becomes more attractive to foreign products, and that is where the localization of the product description is needed. Web-based services are especially seeing a surge of demand for Khmer translation. These services include financial products such as forex and online banking.

In addition to the demand above, thanks to a noticeable size of Khmer speaking population in the US (276,667 people based on the 2010 census), document translation into Khmer has a significant increase due to access requirement in the US federal law. Health insurance access is among the top driver of the demand with ongoing policy updates, and administrative forms and documentation. The US education also produces a large number of documents that need translating into Khmer, among other non-English languages.

Khmer Translator Online

Since local Khmer translation agencies are still mostly serving offline demand from local companies and individuals, Khmer translators online are mostly translation agencies outside the country that outsource the services to local freelance translators. For this reason, the cost is usually as high as twice or three times the cost of the translation ordered directly from a local translation agency or from a freelancer directly. On the plus side, you will be ensured the best of the Khmer translators are recruited, tested and even trained. It is what Khmer Translators excel at providing with our experienced and highly qualified Khmer translators. However, you need to translate into Khmer as well as into many other languages, one of such agencies you can trust is Blend Translation Service (formerly One Hour Translation).

Khmer Picture Translation

Translating texts in a picture into any language is challenging as it is slow and require formatting to match the format in the picture. Recent text recognition technology makes translating a picture text much more efficient. One of the free text recognition technology is provided by Google. The same technology can be used to translate Khmer into English (or the other way around) to get the texts from the pictures before using those texts to translate in a CAT tool or translate them in any way a translator prefers. Just import the image (JPEG, GIF, and PNG) into your Google Drive and open it as Google Docs. Then translate as you see suited. Note though that other text recognition technologies do not always provide the correct match for Khmer characters. I have used a few including MemoQ, Trados SDL, and MateCAT and they don’t do the job. I usually get a messed-up pile of characters that makes no senses whenever I imported an image Khmer texts for the tool to recognize.

Khmer Google Translate

There is a significant improvement for Khmer Google Translate to translate from English into Khmer. The accuracy is especially high for short simple phrase with the structure “subject + verb with/out the object.” There is still resistance from clients, though, when it comes to using Google Translate to translate into Khmer. It is still considered not as accurate and natural even though it has become more and more reliable in terms of the quality of the translation. Having said that, it is fair to say that Khmer Google Translate, just like other language pairs, does not reach a level in which it can be used independently without a human translator yet. Other than simple structured phrase or sentences, Google Translate still can only translate accurately for literal meaning. That is why a human translator can still not be replaced.

Khmer Translator Apps

Even though a few Khmer Translator Apps pop up in the Play Store claiming to provide the translation between the languages, these apps are just using Google Translate API to do the job. Even Microsoft Translator only offers the translation which includes Khmer monther tongue as recently as February 2021, showing the lack of reliable Khmer translator apps in the market. The best option available is still Google Translate. However, human translators are still the choice to go to if you are looking to translate official documents or any texts for business or publication purpose.

Khmer Translation Services

If you are looking for Khmer translation services only, then Khmer Translators is your choice. We translate, edit, proofread and run quality assurance on multiple stages to ensure the best quality possible. Unlike agencies that outsource the task, we translate with our local in-house translators, and you would save almost half the prices for the same or, more frequently, better results. However, if you require Khmer translation services along with other language pairs, and don’t mind a bit of extra recruiting work, reaching a professional freelancer at Proz.com or Translatorscafe.com is the best way to cut middle man cost. Other platforms that you can find Khmer translators include Upwork.com, Fiverr.com and Freelancer.com but since these latter websites focus on providing a broad range of services, you will have fewer options, and usually have to pay a high fee to create a contract through them. It is better though to use other agencies such as Blend Translation Service or Translated.com than working hard to recruit a translator yourself without saving any cost.
